FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How is midwifery care from Dr. Em different?
The difference is that visits are longer so that we may develop the trust so important in out-of-hospital midwifery care. The extra time allows us to understand your values and customize our care so that your birth choices are respected while keeping you and your baby safe and healthy. The first prenatal visit is generally 75-90 minutes. Most prenatal visits are 45-60 minutes. Prenatal care from Dr. Em occurs at the standard frequency: monthly until 28 weeks, then every other week. Starting at 36 weeks visits are weekly until you have your baby.
What can I expect at my first visit?
Dr. Em will take the time to understand your case including your medical history, mental/emotional, and social aspects during your 90 minute new patient visit. After this detailed history she will perform physical exams, and in most cases order labwork. You will typically receive some treatment at the first visit, however in some cases she will await lab results to target your treatment plan.
Your second visit will include a detailed evaluation of your lab results, your individualized treatment plan, as well as a brief checkup.
What does a course of treatment look like?
After the second visit, follow up visits occur on a monthly basis for the first few months to assure you are receiving the support you need and responding to treatment. In some cases visits initially occur more frequently depending on your health condition. Your treatment will include some combination of the following:
- Diet
- Lifestyle Changes
- Movement
- Stress Management
- Botanical Medicine (Herbs are my favorite!)
- Natural medicines such as vitamins and minerals
- Bodywork - Craniosacral, Holistic Pelvic Care, and other gentle manual therapies
- Counseling
Do you take insurance?
Dr. Emerald can assist you in obtaining payments from your health insurance company for care you receive from her. You are expected to pay for your visit at the time of service and will receive a substantial discount. Dr. Emerald is not an in-network provider due to the challenges of accepting insurance.
Insurance companies routinely delay payments, pay a fraction of the amount billed for office visits, and refuse to pay for some types of treatment (or make the provider jump through hoops, known as preauthorization). It is not uncommon for a staff member to spend two to three times the length of your visit verifying insurance, performing preauthorizations, submitting claims, following up on claims, and arguing with insurance companies to get them to pay.
So, in an effort to keep costs low and pass on the savings to you, we can provide you a superbill that will allow you to be reimbursed for the medical services you paid for. The superbill does not guarantee your insurance company will pay you as you may have coinsurance and/or deductible. The benefit is that you will never receive a surprise bill as you paid up front for services.
Being out-of-network allows me to focus on your care and what is best for you instead of jumping through hoops and limiting your care base don what your insurance company or a total stranger thinks is best for you.
